Tooth Replacement Options in New York, NY

At SoHo Dental Group, we have several methods of restoring a patient’s teeth. By consulting with a patient and determining their candidacy for certain treatments, we help patients make the right choice for their situation.

Bridges

When one tooth or a small number of teeth in a row have been lost, a dental bridge can be used to fill this gap. A bridge is a restoration created in a dental lab and then sent to SoHo Dental Group. It is composed of two crowns and one or more replacement teeth in the middle. We will prepare two teeth on either side of the gap for the placement of these crowns and then securely cement the bridge into place. A bridge is not removable and, when cared for properly, can last for many years. A fixed, partial denture is also known as a “tooth-supported fixed bridge.”

Crowns

If a tooth has been fractured, injured, or deeply decayed, a crown can preserve the remaining tooth tissue. To make room for a crown to be placed, we must shave down the size of the tooth being repaired. We then take an impression of your prepared tooth and send this mold to a dental lab so your crown can be created.

The lab provides a crown matched to the color and shape of your other teeth, which we firmly cement onto your prepared tooth. In most cases, we provide a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth until the permanent one is ready.

Crowns are made from gold fused to porcelain or ceramic covered with a layer of porcelain. The fine porcelain on the exterior gives it a natural translucence that matches your other teeth.

Dentures

Dentures may be partial (also called a bridge) or complete, meaning they replace a single tooth or an entire set of upper or lower teeth. Today’s dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than those of a generation ago, and there are more types to choose from.

Implant-supported dentures may be permanently attached to nearby existing teeth or dental implants, providing the greatest stability. Alternatively, removable partial dentures are easier to clean. Please consult with us so we can help you choose the right type of denture for your situation.

Implants

Our patients who receive dental implants often say this method provides greater satisfaction than any other. While implants require a longer treatment period, they function and look just like natural teeth—making them one of the best options to replace missing teeth.

The first step is placing a small titanium post in the location of the missing tooth root. Over the next few months, the post bonds with the surrounding bone. We then secure an abutment to the post, which connects the ceramic replacement tooth to the implant. For patients in good health with strong bone density, implants have a very high success rate and can last for many years.

Once complete, implants allow you to return to your usual diet and cleaning routine. They require no special care beyond regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings to ensure long-term success.

The Health Risks of Missing Teeth

The bone in your jaw is designed to absorb the pressures of biting and chewing. When front teeth are missing, the supporting bone no longer receives stimulation. This leads to a breakdown process called resorption. As bone is lost, it becomes weaker, can collapse, or even fracture.

When many teeth are lost, significant bone loss may cause the lower face to sink in, making a person appear older. Weakened bone can also threaten nearby teeth, leading to gum disease and further tooth loss.

This is why we recommend dental implants for most patients—they are the only tooth replacement method that keeps your jawbone healthy, strong, and stable over time.

If you’re considering a replacement for one or more missing teeth, please consult with us. We’ll assess your candidacy for implants and help you choose the best replacement option for your oral health, convenience, budget, and goals.
