Preventative Dentistry

At SoHo Dental Group, we know that providing each patient with excellent preventative care is the best way to help them maintain excellent dental health. Every time we meet a new patient in our SoHo office, we have an opportunity to put this patient at ease, to educate him or her on proper tooth and mouth care, and to provide quality treatment in a relaxing, friendly environment. This is our mission and our passion.

Teeth Cleaning

Most people know that it’s important to get regular cleanings and examinations but not everyone is comfortable visiting the dentist. That’s why every one of our staff is trained to make even a routine visit for cleaning and examination as pleasant as possible. You may even look forward to your next appointment.

Your visit will start with a thorough cleaning with one of our friendly hygienists. Using an ultrasonic scaler, your hygienist will clean away plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth. This device cleans your teeth more thoroughly and in a more comfortable manner than any other method. Your hygienist also inspects every surface of your teeth to ensure they are in good condition. A polishing will follow to scrub away stains and ensure your teeth are perfectly smooth.

Your hygienist will also use a tiny probe to inspect your teeth and gums to ensure that your gums are attached securely and tightly to your teeth. If your gums begin to pull away from your teeth, pockets are created and these pockets give bacteria a place to thrive. Gum infections can develop rapidly. It’s very important for the health of your teeth to catch this problem as soon as possible.

Before turning you over to your dentist, your hygienist will teach you anything you might need to know to take better care of your teeth at home. If you have any questions about home dental care, please feel free to ask.

X-rays

If your time for x-rays has rolled around, your hygienist will take these images so they can be reviewed by the dentist you’ll see on this visit. With our state-of-the-art equipment, you’ll be able to see each image projected on a screen in your treatment room as soon as it has been captured.

Today’s digital equipment creates images that are much clearer and more detailed than older film x-rays. This clarity enables your dentist to accurately diagnose any problems developing in your teeth or mouth and point them out them to you.

Examinations

With the information and measurements provided by the hygienist and your most recent x-rays in hand, your dentist will then examine your teeth, gums, mouth and even your facial structure. If there are signs of any problems developing, your dentist will explain the problem and show you the signs using x-rays or images from an intraoral (used inside your mouth) camera. Finally, you will be informed of any treatment you might need to keep your teeth and mouth in perfect condition.

Mouth Guards

At SoHo Dental Group, we make mouth guards to protect your teeth from damage while you are sleeping or while you’re engaging in sports. During both activities, your teeth can be at risk of damage.

During sleep, grinding your teeth night after night will wear them down and can cause fractures and damage to dental work. You may not even be aware that you are grinding your teeth until we point out how worn your teeth are becoming. We can help you prevent further damage with a custom-made mouth guard.
During vigorous sports, a mouth guard is vital to prevent teeth from being cracked, broken or loosened. A custom mouth guard from SoHo Dental Group is the most comfortable, effective method of protection.

Periodontics (Care of the Gums)

The word “periodontics” refers to the treatment of your gums and all other structures that support your teeth to keep them healthy and free from any pain or infection. If we see any signs of redness, puffiness or infection in your gums, we will bring this to your attention. This early stage of gum disease is called “gingivitis.” By treating gingivitis early, we can prevent this condition from progressing to a more severe condition called “periodontitis.” Early treatment is faster, easier and less expensive, so we will always be alert to any early signs of gum disease.
