Oral Health and Overall Well-Being

Until we educate our patients on the link between oral health and overall well-being, many patients have no idea that the repercussions of dental problems can extend far beyond the mouth. If fact, caring for your teeth and gums can prevent the development of health problems elsewhere in your body. Your dentist may be able to detect changes in your mouth and teeth which are signs of illness you may not even know you have.

To give you an idea of this connection, here are a few examples:
  • Infections in the gum that may just appear as puffiness or soreness may actually be affecting the health of your heart or for pregnant women, the development of their baby .
  • Gum disease can also contribute to the development of pre-diabetes and finally, diabetes.
  • Missing teeth or collapsed bone in the area of missing teeth has been associated with a higher risk of stroke.
  • If a person takes good care of their teeth and gums and still develops gum disease, this could be a sign of heart disease that has not yet been detected.
  • Mouth cancers can be detected early by maintaining a regular schedule of cleanings and examinations.
When we care for your teeth and gums, we are actually caring for your overall health. Please consult with us to learn more.
